NCCA Trains Educators on Cultural Education, Produces Scholars on Graduate Diplomas

In collaboration with Northwest Samar State University, DepEd Calbayog, and other HEIs in Visayas region, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Philippine Cultural Education Program held its three-day “Pagsasanay sa Edukasyong Pangkultura” on July 7-9, 2023 at Business Development Center, NwSSU.

PCEP aims to promote cultural education in the academe through honing the cultural awareness, culture-based approach, and cultural competencies of educators across the Philippines. PCEP also offers scholarships on graduate diplomas in Cultural Education. Hence, the participants of the training were the selected NCCA scholars and interested educators on the said theme.

Hindi kultura ng mga Pilipino ang problema kundi ang universal culture of power and wealth,” Professor Felipe de Leon Jr., President of Asian Social Institute, elucidated during his talk on culture. According to him, Filipinos are the genius in human connectivity and relationship in the world, and this is evident in our rich language. Further, Dr. Jovy M. Peregrino of University of the Philippines Diliman discussed the Cultural Education as a Discipline while Ms. Jonathan Jimenez, NACES Visayas President presented an Epic Lesson Exemplar. After which, participants showcased their learnings through their own version of culture-based lesson exemplars being critiqued by Dr. Orlando B. Magno, PCEP Faculty. Indigenization, localization, and contextualization were the highlights of Dr. Magno’s discourse.

All of the activities catered the NCCA-PCEP’s vision of A NATION OF CULTURALLY LITERATE AND EMPOWERED FILIPINOS.
